Core ISO 17025 laboratory equipment: measurement and analysis

The heart of any testing lab is its measuring instruments. Depending on your scope, this typically includes analytical balances, pH and conductivity meters, spectrophotometers, and titration equipment. Every instrument that produces a reported result must be calibrated and traceable to national or international standards.

Separation and purification

Records, calibration and traceability — where labs actually stumble

This is where many labs lose their accreditation — not on the bench, but in the evidence file. Every instrument that affects a result needs an unbroken chain of documentation, and assessors probe it hard.

Calibration schedules. Keep a master equipment register and assign each item a calibration interval based on its use, stability and the manufacturer's guidance — not a blanket 'once a year' for everything. External calibrations must be traceable to national or international standards through SAAC-recognized or accredited calibration providers, and you should supplement them with in-house intermediate checks between calibrations.

Maintenance logs and traceability. Keep a dated maintenance and service log for every instrument; record every check weight, reference standard and CRM against its certificate; and define a clear out-of-tolerance procedure so that when equipment drifts you can trace exactly which results were affected. Add a measurement uncertainty budget and method-validation records, and your evidence file will stand up to any assessment.
